report by Scottie

Following a disappointing lunch in the Wharfedale Gate (more Gordon Ramsey then Alf Ramsey these days) Mark Thatcher and his team turned right out of the car park and proceeded in convoy towards pool. A schoolboy error as we were of course due to play Arthington which would have required a left turn !

Dennis dances with joy at winning the toss!Arriving for our now traditional winter fixture and season ending match a strong Jesters team faced up to the bracing conditions. As usual the younger members of the squad were ill prepared for this, not a jumper between them !

Dennis, the spritely 74 year old home captain, duly won the toss and decided to be undecided. He consulted each member of his team and after what seemed to be an eon concluded we were probably the better side and invited the jesters to bat.

Now this correspondant had turned up with the spirit of Terry Butcher sporting two broken fingers from the previous week  aiming for another appearance towards the 300 and needing two wickets to regain the mantle of the seasons leading wicket taker.

Scoring was just what I needed to keep supple and warm.

The Jesters skipper and 6 million dollar man decided he was now fit enough to open the batting and piled on 30 runs in the first ten overs with Callum. The openers having departed the Jesters cut loose posting a massive 274 giving yours truly every opportunity to take the necessary wickets yet sadly though not another red inker.

During the innings the tea ladies arrived with our fayre of sandwiches and pizza which they placed in the fridge to keep warm and offering an interesting choice of beverages being orange juice or cuprinol !

Tea was taken by a few and duly sponsored by Woodside Insurance. I was hoping to bag a few conkers for the juniors of the Scott family however these had been hoovered up by the Goldthorpes who incredibly managed to collect two huge carrier bags full. Endless fun awaits, health and safety permitting.

An extended tea allowed me to catch up with my old Music Teacher and Cricket master Martin Binks who at 70 still performed incredibly behind the stumps conceeding far fewer byes than our own much younger pretender. Mr Binks gave me my first (and only) break in cricket spot the differancemop headsinviting me to captain the schools 1st X1 in the season 76/77. I was also amazed at his devotion to following the progress of his former pupils pointing out he had noticed in articles i that had letters after my name. Yes i proudly announced many years of study and examinations had made me an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, ACII. Qualification and an annual fee means i can call myself ACII, i advised with chest pumped out. No came the reply from Mr Binks "DNB", I read the Jesters website every week and see S Scott DNB.   Bugger !

The Arthington reply began slowly and got slower. Dogged resistance meant they were not dismissed until the penultimate over making for a very much unplanned for 8 oclock finish. This left time for a quick couple of drinks at the Wharfedale where we were able to thank our hosts for their hospitality and explain  that we did have one of our strongest sided out against them this year.

And so the 50th Jesters season finished with a win with only the AGM to look forward to where the destiny of this years tankard will be decided. Very much like Milliband v Milliband second choice votes may be crucial in the fight for the accolade between Stewart Dobson and Ben Senior. Watch this space.

Catching competition 2010 final score:- RL-8, DRB-3, Scottie-3, Hill tag team-2, Ives-1

(I'm not hiding him in the field well enough!!!!)

the last team of the year
