report by DRB

In the Jesters much reduced program the annual end of season trip to Arthington represented the 1st & last non-the skipper with Nigel Ling & Cirantour game of the season. With the Autumn evenings starting to draw in, it was decided that a 1pm start was appropriate with a 12.30 meet at the2 of the "Ronettes" Tom Finnigan & Luke Watson. ground. At 12.40 only the skipper was present & worried. 5 minutes later there was a mass arrival (from the Wharfedale pub down the road!) A toss was necessary & after winning it we decided (as usual) to bat first. When starting to give everybody their batting position I mentioned 5, Mel thought this was the price of the match fee & proceded to hand over £5! With the Jesters usual strong Otley based batsmen all either in Australia or on a end of season race trip the new makeshift opening pair was Jake Agar & Alex Rose who, both I am sure would admit that they have underachieved in the past for the Jesters. In the words of Caggy – “never worried fruit” as they put on 131 for the 1st wicket! Jake was the more aggressive but Alex also played his part as both made Jesters pb’s. After that everybody chipped in to take us over the 200 mark. The only man to miss out was Joel Morley; this normally genuine no 11 was given “a go” at no 7 (because his mum Diane told me I had to give him a bat!)

Ben & Dobby with "old sage" Gorden Chadwick.looks like a coconut shyJoel however can bowl & with some pace! He was decidedly unlucky to only take 1 wicket in a hostile 8 over spell. With the bowling at the other end “ a bit more friendly” the hosts made a good start & it took the introduction of  “veteran madman” Mel to turn the tide. With his mixture (in his words) of sliders, doosras & anything else he has heard on the tv (they are all the same & go straight on!) he ripped through the home side with a “Michele”. The skipper also found somebody to bowl ok from the other end when Ciran Barker had a go & he picked up a nice cheap 3-for. One of Mel’s debuting  “ronettes” from Ossett, Luke Watson came back to take the last wicket, just as the sun started to set behind the trees and on another cricket season.
