The Jesters made the 60 mile trek to Hardwick Hall with the now customary 9 men.. On winning the toss normal service was restored when we elected to bat on a very greenish pitch (which played a lot better than it looked).

2 of the triplets arriveHardwick Hall has that quaint essential Sunday friendly feel to it; i.e. an open field in the middle of nowhere, it’s actually in the grounds of the hall of the same name but you know what I mean.

The un-related  Wilkinsons ; David of Rawdon & Steve of Blubberhouses (formally Rawdon) opened the innings & amassed a huge partnership, David the more fluent & aggressive in his 1st senior ton & Steve very technical correct in achieving his Jesters p.b.

Mention just be made of the 3rd member of the Wilkinson triplets, Chris of Pool who hit a huge 6 into the woods & then when dismissed got straight onto the phone ( I assume to Sky sports) to tell them about it!

The last dozen or so overs were spent batting carefully so as not to run up an even bigger scorewhich is the cut strip? after lots of murmurings from the home side, these proved to be rather hollow by the end of the match.

The time old mistake of over indulgence on an excellent tea was again made which may have had a bearing on the fielding performance which followed.

Been a traditionalist I always feel that a team’s energy & performance in the field all stems from the wicket-keeper. Pod, buoyant from his previous weeks stumping victim decided that nobody was taking the keeping gloves from him & then proceeded to find out that it is as hard a job as Matt Prior makes it look. Hopefully we have seen the last of that experiment! Macca after his previous nights activities deciding 2 overs of medium pace was sufficient for him took over & proceeded to remove the bails at ever opportunity.

As well as the 2 Hardwick Hall centurians batted, even they must agree that they were given numerous chances by the Jesters fielding. But is not the batsman’s fault that 10 catches were spilled. As you know I am not normally one to attach blame but in this case names must be named & shamed so in varying degrees of difficulty the culprits were :-

Macca   – 3its rent a crowd

Pod        - 1

Tank      - 1

D. Wilky -1

Weff       - 1   (offset by the only catch taken)

Skipper  - 1    (a very tough one late on)

Scottie   - 2

The other motto from the game if you don’t take wickets (see above) is that whatever score you make you can not defend it with 9 men., but thanks must go to those 9 for making the trip & fulfilling the fixture. One of those was David Tempest known to all his friends ( which I hope we are ) as tank. Tank has been at so many Jesters games either watching or in the opposition that nobodywhats for teacould believe it was actually his 1st of hopefully many games. I feel with his cunning off-spin & more importantly dry wit he is a natural Jester. He does however need to learn the terminology as for example when told we were going to try & plan B a new batsman he replied he did not even know what plan A was!

The home sides celebration on achieving victory in the last over were very muted perhaps realizing their 1st half moanings had been a little premature. Did somebody once say that’s it’s  “a game of 2 halves”.
