After the cancelled matches of last year the Jim Bastow memorial match finally resumed with a competitive fixture at the new venue of Low Moor, the new home of most of the ex Norwood Green "silent brotherhood". Pleasingly interest in the fixture was high with no place available for stalwarts of both clubs Graham Feather or Dave Nichols & Jesters skipper Bell had to make an 'easy' phone call on Thursday night to inform club Chairman Coates he had been axed! It was however good to see Coco, Caggy, Eric Harrison & Graham Feather with his basset hounds among the largish crowd (for a Jesters match). I would also like to thank Marie Bastow, Jimmy's mum for attending & supporting the fixture.

Carl Harrison was out sweeping early, that was the bird feathers from the damp & uneven looking pitch at this exposed ground overlooking the M62 motorway.

Lessons were clearly not learned from 3 years ago when we finished in the dark with a September 2.30pm start time but undaunted on winning the toss the Jesters as always elected to bat 1st. None of the batsmen, including 2 or 3 we have not seen all season but dragged out for this match could come to terms with the accurate bowling on a seaming & uneven bouncing pitch. The only rest bite came with a disappointingly short spell of rubbish from Carl Harrison.

One curiosity which the match committee will have to look into was at the fall of the 1st wicket the not out batsman Graham Dobson was seen running to the boundary to urinate directly on the boundary bowls line of messers Scott, Hill & Hill (again won by Hill senior; what a season he has had around the grounds of Yorkshire & Lancashire).

With only 3 contributions in the 20s an all out total of 129 did not look enough, even with the slow outfield & the opposition’s knack of finding ways to normally loose this fixture.

The teas were again prepared & provided by Wendy Harrison, mother of Gareth & Carl & another long time friend of the Jesters. Many thanks to her & to the Low Moor club for hosting the fixture.

The Jesters outstanding wicket keeper Sully decided to turn funny at half time & declared he would not don the gloves for the 2nd half so Graham Dobson kindly filled in again but reminded all he bowlers that he does not do 'leg side rubbish'.

Early wickets were essential but opening batsmen R.Speight & C.Harrison batted very sensibly, uniquely for the latter. The introduction of Waitey resulted in a thick edge from Carls bat onto pad & a looped catch for Dobby behind the stumps. Aire-Wharfe league umpire Phil Tempest correctly gave him out to Carls disbelief & he trudged off muttering, next to be seen in the adjoining fields Dr Doolittle like talking to the horses. That dismissal just brought in Low Moor batsman A.Pinfield who played the innings of the day with a fine 50 & winning the match for his side. A late 'bought' wicket from Scottie fittingly let in Low Moor skipper Gareth Harrison who all the previous week had been "talking the talk" to hit the winning runs with overs to spare & still in daylight!

The Bastow memorial trophy, out of Jester hands for the 1st time was presented by Coco to the winning skipper. We look foreword to trying to regain it next year.

final catching competition score:- D.Bell 2  S.Scott 3
