report by DRB

For the 1st time ever the 1st game of the season turned out to be on tour at the terrific St Ed & MelAnnes ground in Blackpool who were skippered again by old friend Andy Kellett.

With a record amount of phone calls & text's in the preceding week the XI that eventually made it onto the field I estimate had changed about a dozen times from 1 week prior!  After setting off in glorious sunshine we hit the predictable Lancashire rain on the M55 but the game started on time in "light drizzle".

In the middle of a good partnership with Stuart Smith Aussie debutant Eammon Vines slipped when playing a cut shot & fell to the ground in agony having dislocated his knee, a sickening sight for all80s Jesters those present! The quick response ambulance arrived "45 minutes" later & that was the end of Eammon's tour - we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile Ed Brown & Mark Harrison (Who had both kindly driven out for the day- the 1st of many coming's & going's) were flaying the bowling; Ed in particular was savage; It was a change for him to be making runs for us instead of against as only Matt O'Grady can rival the Aussieshis collection of scores against us for many & varied teams over the years!

Mel Wood & Jake Agar finished off the last few overs, the latter in particular "seeing the ball like a full stop!"  The Jesters with representatives from 7 different Saturday league sides (Otley-3 Burley-2 Rawdon-1 Wrenthorpe-1 Farsley-1 Goldsborough-1 Papplewick-1) took the field with the Otley duo of Halloran & Brough operating together again, the former lasting just 1 over as a mixture of a long standing injury & the effects of a graduation partyNurse! the previous night took their toll! It's just what a captain needs; only 9 men in the field at St Annes!  Broughy was unluckily wicket-less with cymbals Ben Morley missing an easy stumping chance but all the other bowlers chipped away & the cause in the field was helped when Joel Morley turned up (to get out of working!) & kindly did a bit of sub fielding. The fielding was very good especially from Aussie debutant Andrew Ross with a couple of good catches.

A rare victory was achieved over the St Annes club & a fine evenings entertainment was commenced in the clubhouse before the nightlife of Blackpool was explored. A couple of the younger looking lads needed their ID (John Brough used his hairy chest as proof of age!) to get into the bars & Mel was only too willing to get in using his OAP's bus pass!
