With a few thick heads and not enough sleep, breakfast was a long drawn out affair with matty mccallum leaves his pleasure beech winnings lying around!Matty McCallum first up at 6.00 a.m. and the Leptonites barely scaping in on time at 9.29 a.m. There were also the Dobson twins, helping themselves to the Norbreck’s generosity, although they weren’t too enamoured by the service and thought of demanding a word with the chef.

Aimless wandering started at 10.00 with a tram ride to the Pleasure Beach and straight onto the Arabian Derby. Matty took on all contenders and scooped most of the winning tickets which he frittered away on the usual tat. Belly came into his own on the ‘thoroughbread’ equivalent, The Kentucky Derby, but the overall standard was poor.

Highlight of the morning was Coco on the basketball game. £2 for 2 balls, score a basket. Win a prize. The second attempt did several laps of honour beforethe crowd starts to build up disappearing down the hoop, and we watched awe-struck as a 7ft orange and black shark was handed over to a stunned Coco.

The Dobsons were found lining their stomachs and a prompt departure to Thornton Cleveleys followed. A picturesque ground and a bunch of friendly looking cricketers welcomed us. Belly won the toss and after a nanoseconds thought decided we’d have a bat. And bat we did.

Matty and the skipper opened up, Matty falling first, but most of the other batters gorged themselves. Belly rolled back the years to slap his way into the 70’s, before a Chairman’s coughing fit left him high and dry and stumped. Dobby (S) again showed his attacking flair and clean hitting, Andy Grey fell one short on 49 but it was the tourist of the year Dale, who filled his boots, and emptied Belly’s bag of stolen goods, smashing all-comers to all parts.

waiting for a bat & sunbathing! For the record, Pod again won the boundary bowls, with Stu putting in an impressive debutantes showing and Scotty just not having enough in the tank, when it went to the last end.

Moment of the day however went to Coco. We’d have had a nailed on £250 from You’ve Been Framed as, kicking a tennis ball round the boundary, his shorts were suddenly around his ankles. Quick work avoided further embarrassment, you’re all right John, no-one noticed!

Selfless batting let Pod and Coco in for the final flourish and a scampered overthrow, took the total to bang on 300, surely a Jesters first .

Undoubtedly the hosts were not the strongest of XI’s so Pod and Stu each bowled off 5 paces. Coco on as first change got a wicket first ball and Scotty joined the party with the chairman himself clasping a skier to his hirsute chest.

Captain Bell continued to ring the changes and set attacking fields with only Dale left sunbathing in the outfield. Dobby put in an impressive spell, despite beenjesters loose 6 cricket balls! sledged by his namesake for lack of stamina the previous night. Andy Grey also turned his hand to spin as Dale harboured thought of turning his own hand to Andy’s mother. With the overs running out Pod strapped on the boards and gave Matty a quick lesson behind the stumps. A sharp catch off Aidey, perhaps stolen from an expectant 2nd slip, was followed by an equally good snaffle, stood up to Belly as the skipper got 2 in 2, after  Dobby claimed a dubious catch at slip. The hat-trick ball was the usual dross.

The innings was closed with Aidey taking a sharp return chance and the socialising commenced with the usual purchases of a few jugs of beer.

Post match – All names have been left out to avoid any repercussions.

If we played our cricket like a one day international, the approach to the night out was more 20/Twenty.

X chased a wide one that he probably should have left alone so early in the night, bringing the quote of the day from Y. ‘It was like shaking hands with Jeremy Beadle’. There was also some nifty footwork on show, and more than once a dance down the track resulted in a play and miss, and rarely a little tickle.

Y and Z had a mix up on the calling, resulting in Z thinking he was home. The replay showed he wasn’t even in the picture.

Y knows all about building an innings, and knew a steady start would reap rewards as the innings neared its close. Never has the phrase ‘bat today, score runs tomorrow’ been more appropriate.
