Report by DRB
With this encounter cancelled the previous 2 years because of over-running league cup commitments a dry week meant a welcome return to Olicanians at the foot of Ilkley Moor on a glorious sunny day for this long standing fixture .
The 1st Sunday lunch crew of the season consisted of the skipper, RL, Winterbottom’s, junior & senior, Bong 'ead, Scott Harrison & Phelma (Ives) & Louise who had just announced their engagement & invited everyone in Yorkshire to the forthcoming party except this correspondent (I know when to take a hint). The Generous Pioneer in Burley-in-Wharfedale was the venue and a excellent 2-for-£10 offer was taken advantage of with the diet conscious skipper admiring the salad selection (but not taking it!!!).
With Jester’s chairman (& long standing Ollys player) Coco’s knee finally giving up & so unable to play in this fixture for the 1st time in living memory the team took a youthful look with a couple of veterans thrown in –daft lad always a good mixture.
After a negotiated toss the opening pair of Callum & Ives opened the batting with only the former carrying out the skippers let more past pupils fo Cocoinstructions (score at 8 an over & don’t take any risks) & easily outscoring the subdued Ives! Debutant Redmond Bolton (from the Pool-in-Wharfedale club & current Joe Lumb player) made a bright & breezy 20odd but all the batting was from the James Dean school – Live fast & die young. So it transpired that Scottie, batting at number 10 (high for him but there to protect the flimsy hearted skipper) strode to the wicket just after drinks to join Miami vice captain Dale who had watched wickets fall, confetti like around him including Dobby who hit a long hop straight into the air as soon as he could so he could get off & spend the rest of the afternoon sun-bathing with “friend” Cruella De Vil.
Scottie proceeded to take his responsibilities to new heights by batting through to the end (the longest he’s ever batted) & help the ever reliable Dale to take us to a decent score with a partnership of 76 for the 9th wicket.
After the always impressive Olly’s tea the crowd was starting to build up as people Thelma & Louisestarted moving away from nearby packed river banks to see some live action.
After a few years absence the bowling was again opened by a Harrison but this time it was not a member of the Wyke clan but Scott, a Aussie from Adelaide who is turning out for Rawdon this season as their overseas star. Dane started from the other end & between them they shared the first 4 wickets before giving way to Scottie (now an all-rounder) & 12 year old debutant Nathan Goldthorpe (another impressive cricketer in this talented family). Nathan’s 1st spell of bowling in senior cricket (I think) coincided with the Ollys best 2 batsmen at the crease (must be bad captaincy) but he plugged away admirably & was rewarded with the wicket of the Ollys skipper & overseas star batter with the help of Scottie’s 100th catch in Jesters colours.
The Olly’s innings was finished off rapidly with Dale taking his 1st ever hat-trick in any game of cricket. It was also the 4th in the long history of the Jesters following in the footsteps of Graham Beaumont, Neil Waite & Stewart Dobson – a rogues gallery if ever there was one!
A early finish meant we could sit & have a beer in the warmth with the glorious backdrop of Ilkley moor, a fine end to any day!
