Belly has sorted out a team of mixed abilities to take on the Olicanians challenge. First up it’s Bolton Villas and we insert the opposition. Kirkheaton’s Oz rips out their openers and we comfortably clean up the rest of their batting to be chasing something around the 65 mark. Nothing goes Villas way as Hollywood sobers up in time to take a catch, but otherwise finds the ground too low for his liking, and Dobby has a hand in two run outs. How unlucky are they?
Macca and Dobby knock off the runs in quick time and without giving a chance. Onto the final.
If it aint broke, don’t fix it. So we win the toss and bat first this time? How does that work then?
Macca decides we need in excess of 300, and sets of like a train. Dobby tries his best to stop the runs (with his backside) but Macca brings up his 50 within seven overs and then gets out. The score at this stage is 70-1 with 13 overs left, so how on earth do we manage to collapse to 111 all out in 18 overs? Well, through good bowling, decent catching and totally inept batting, that’s how. The innings closes with Belly getting bowled by a straight one from Ollies slow bowler. Pod thought he recognised the guy, but couldn’t recall his name until we were chatting about the dismissal after the game. The initials on their shirts gave the game away, as Rick Waller is added to Belly’s list of bowlers who are just too good for him.
With such a meagre total to defend we hope that the Ollies will bat as recklessly as we had done, but alas not. Corcoran holds the innings together and a patient knock sees them home with a couple of overs left.
It’s back to the drawing board for Dave, as he targets this competition as probably his last chance of a medal on the cricket field. Expect wholesale changes next year with all those under-performers surely facing the axe.
Nevertheless the day is a success. There is a healthy crowd and something for everyone. The Jesters enjoyed the bouncy castle whilst fielding in the final, and the hosts put on a terrific day. Thanks to all concerned.
