report by pod
Casual by name, casual by
nature. Jesters turned up eager and willing for a 2.00 p.m. start, but the
opposition rolled up in dribs and drabs anywhere between 2.15 and 3.00 p.m. As
is the
norm,
we batted. Waity, given instructions to bat through, was first out and Matty
soon followed playing a lovely off drive, straight into the fielders welcoming
hands. Andy Grey, looking less like a frightened rabbit, batted wonderfully. He
attacked the loose stuff and defended the good balls and hurried up the run rate
as was required. Aidey is the new Stanny with the bat (but a bit better). He
goes about the business unruffled and knows his limitations. Into the last 10
overs, Pod had a word and said we need to start attacking more. Aidey agreed and
hit 13 singles to take him past his 50. Pod himself had a go and hit a
(relatively) quick 27 with the sweep and the cut exceptionally played. The
youngsters got in right at the end as Trevor and Matt helped us over the 200
mark and to a total that might be defendable.
Tea was the usual languid
affair. Matt got a telling off for taking too many sandwiches.
Jesters started taking out the smoked salmon and replacing it with cheese and
Branston, Philastines. Belly had a coughing fit, Scotty wanting to demonstrate
the Heimlich Manoeuvre but failing to be able to get his arms round him.
Cricket resumed (reluctantly)
as storm clouds threatened. Belly, with three senior opening bowlers in the team
elected to bowl 14 year old Trevor Penny, with no protection whatsoever on a
lightning outfield, and we paid the price. Ritchie was his usual economical self
at the other end (2- 17) but the casuals were off to a flier. Matt Graham was
brought on and despite a splendid catch from Scotty at slip, still disappeared
too regularly. With the light fading and the clouds continuing to be a menace
Waity and Scotty got a go. Batters S.Wilkinson (64*) and S.Rotheray made hay
until Nellie bowled Rotheray for38.
With
lightning in the vicinity Pod was happy to Have his trainers on and explained to
Belly the dangers of wearing spikes. ‘If it strikes the ground there’ll be
no-one off quicker than me’ he said, adding ‘I’m okay I’ve got my rubbers on’.
I wonder how he was going to
explain returning merely a Jesters cap to the awaiting parents of our trio of
juniors and explaining that the Casuals don’t beat us that often so we thought
we better stay out.
Anyway, Marcus saw sense and
took us off, just before the downpour started and fork lightning enveloped
Thongsbridge. We watched the show from the comfort of the tea rooms as Marcus
strolled, fully spiked up, back across the ground to get changed. It was pointed
out that a prompt start would have seen the Jesters defeated, but nevertheless
we will take this ‘winning draw’ into our next game, wherever that may be.
