report by DRB

With the end of the season fast approaching the annual adding up of season wickets revealed Ives at his bestto Scottie that he was in danger of loosing his top on debut Ashleywicket taker tag for the 1st time in living memory so a bombardment of the skipper via emails & text's leaving nobody in any doubt that he was expecting long spells in the 2 remaining games.

A combination of having to wait for half of the Barnsley contingent (Ives) & roadworks on the A65 meant a late arrival for the usually punctual skipper & he was welcomed from jibes from ex-vc, watty )who was in the same position last year) A march straight out to the middle with the opposition skipper Denis who informed me that we should have started half an hour ago & that good to see Neil in Jesters colours againwe would have to make a good over rate when he rubbed salt into the wound by winning the toss & asking us to field!

Holding back high quality bowlers Yates & Batty in favour of the more adventurous combination of Waite & debutantThe Goldthorpe clan supporters. Ashley Benson (from the Calverley club) proved a success with 2 tidy spells & a wicket for the former. As instructed Scottie then began his long spell but only picked up 1 wicket but with quite a few near misses, with veterans Barker & Mitchell booking in for the long haul. With wickets in hand the host club could have a flourish at the end & managed to get a slightly above par score even if the scorebook didn't add up, much to Scotties displeasure, fortunately It was his ex music teacher doing the scoring not his maths teacher.

Tea was spent with a couple of chickens wandering around the changing rooms. I could go into pod mode & rattle off lots of chicken "yokes" at this point but I will refrain from doing so. However Rowdy did ask for a chicken dinner & got a plate of corn!

Thanks to the tea lady who spent an hour boiling water on a camping stove (no electricity in new tea shed) & was then not amused when the Barnsley lads wanted a top up & so needed another 30mins heating time!

After an indifferent performance in the field Ives was dropped down to no3 (much to his insert chicken joke heredisgust - he's sounding more like Macca every week) on a skippers hunch in favour of the new pair of young "prodigy" Callum Goldthorpe & Grieg Batty. After a cautious start the pair blossomed with a century partnership. After his innings Callum was rewarded with a chocolate bar from his gran, what he really needs is a new pair of boots as his current ones are dropping to bits!  But then a flurry of wickets helped by "injured" home umpire Nash (appealing himself while giving a couple of lbw's) got us a bit behind the run rate. Ives failed to pick a top spinner 2nd ball from Geoff Barker after 20odd overs of pad rash, again failing to gravitate positively on his runs v byes equation. The experienced Barnsley pair of Benny & Rowdy then showed their class, the latter in particular was savage with some huge six hits finishing the game in a hurry.

A beer with the opposition in the Wharfedale where the home skipper asked if our players were available for their remaining games, the skipper said he was he was but the home team meant our “county” players Yates & Benson. & then it was a night out with the Barnsley lads who were staying over at the skippers. Although as this piece was written (8am Sunday morning) 1 (Benny) was missing & 2 of the others had just got in!  Roll on Menorca!!!!!!!!!

Alternative report by Ives (edited)

(What REALLY happened).

Arriving very late due to the skippers inability to tell the difference between 2 miles and 20 miles, the start of the game was delayed as DRB proceeded to lose the toss and inform the lads that we were fielding. This pleased no body except Scottie who was hoping to over-haul RL’s season tally with the hat-trick hero absent to perform in the re-named Greig Batty Appreciation 20/20 at Rawdump CC.

Fielding first, captain chaos Bell decided to leave Bats and Rowdy without the ball and open with debutant Ashley (the real) Benson. Paul Benson couldn’t understand why there were 2 Benny’s, and kept turning round whenever “Benny” was shouted to Ashley. So Belly sent him to 3rd man where he fielded sat on a style trying to work out how the electric fence worked. Bless him.

Excellent opening spells were soon rectified when Scottie came on and bowled his normal darts in a mammoth spell that failed to make major inroads to RL’s wicket tally…. Thanks mainly to some inspired dropped catches! (Captain Chaos also dropped a dolly from his own bowling).

Greig Batty was eventually given the ball for the final over but got carted at a rate of 9 per over. Mind you, it is difficult to bowl with Dave Belly hanging out of the back of you!)

In reply, captain chaos tinkered with the batting order, and ended up getting it all wrong! Greig Batty obviously opened, and performed admirably considering Belly was still attached to his rear end!

Rawdon youngster Callum “Tavere” Goldthorpe showed his class with a well grafted 49 from 2,738 deliveries. Perfectly complimented by Greig’s cultured slogging into the gardens. Apparently, the Arthington players are banned from that garden and asked us to leave the ball there. Rowdy just scaled the fence and fetched it back saying “what are they gunna do?”

Dennis Nash proved too quick for Greig and Callum which brought the proper batters to the crease. Only for Geoff Barker, recently released from the Aussie squad, to come on and turn the ball both ways to decimate the middle order.

Old men Rowdy and the real Benny rescued the job when Yatesy realised that the pub was open and that we still needed 50 from the last 4 overs and so destroyed Dennis and Geoff in 7 balls!

After a long hot shower in the over-sized changing facilities, it was off to the pub for a couple of liveners before the night out at Rawdump CC.

Belly was on top form, captain chaos becoming the object of desire for the the tea lady who was playing footsie with the skipper and flashing a bit of inner thigh! All Belly was interested in was Bats not being jealous!!

Eventually getting back to Bell Towers where the skipper assured us he’d stocked up on beer. The 4 cans and 6 bottles lasted all of 5 minutes!

After a shower and micky taking with Belly’s photos it was off to Rawdump for chicken rice and pea and ting, and Greig’s big money move discussions with the skipper, Stuart Smith. However the talks broke down when Stuart’s Mrs, Mandy White, was reliving stories of yesteryear with Rowdy!

Eventually making our way into Leeds to finish off the night, Bats and Belly went home to consummate the relationship, and RL, Rowdy, the real Benny and Ives ended up in Wildcats till 5:30am. RL and Benny stayed for 1 more dance!

A good day all round, and the Barnsley contingent will definitely be playing again.
