report by DRB
With only 3 tourists available it was a much
changed Jesters side who travelled to the annual end
of
season fixture with Arthington. On a sunny autumnal day we did include in our
ranks 2 father & son combinations; 3 if you
include a possible future step father / son combo !! The Jesters did welcome
back from retirement Steve Scott, who finally was making his 300th appearance
for the club (only the 4th player to reach that milestone & undoubted the last)
The home side won the toss & kindly
invited us to bat first. With a possible 8 genuine no 11s in the team the
batting order proved a bit problematic but the new opening pair of Jake & "Bong
head" made a reasonable start but the bulk of the score was made by ex green
lane player Dave Bell & current green lane skipper (and ex junior scorer) Neil
Britton, the latter going on to a maiden career century. A late flourish by a
few of the number elevens saw us to a total that exceeded our wildest
expectations.
Neil bowled a few accurate overs before he
had to leave early to attend a birthday party (only his wife's!). Fellow opener
Joel Morley struggled initially but eventually settled down. Arthington made
their intentions clear from the start by sending in Geoff Barker to open & with
an unusual spurt of stroke making did manage to score 23 in the 25 overs he
spent at the crease. After the opening
partnership
was finally broken by Ben Griggs none of the other batsmen made the slightest
attempt to take their side to victory. Late on Dobby moved himself from mid
wicket to gully so he could dry up Artingtons most productive scoring which was
over throws from Joel Morleys throws from deep mid wicket to the struggling
captain / part time wicket keeper.
Scottie turned back the clock at the end
with a few overs of his slow left hand "darts" but like everybody else found the
Arthington batsmen more interested in their average than trying to win the game.
