report by ss
Sunday brought the mouth-watering prospect of a brand Knew Fixture at Knaresborough Forest.
The writer set off in good time to run the gauntlet of agricultural shows, car boot sales and antique fairs littering the journey only to realise he hadn't a clue where the ground was and had to be guided in by mobile phone.
Thank goodness for modern technology.
Having arrived I was greeted by Christine Waite hoofing off into Knaresborough and the welcome (if not slightly chubby) sight of my old spinning partner CoCo.
The KFC stadium was a magnificent sight with the massed crown mainly gathered in the Union Pub beer garden overlooking the road end.
Batting first as usual openers Wilson & Dobson each scored measured 50's setting us up for a large score. Carrying on the good work was Aidy Gill building a free-flowing innings when Watty got a snorter which brought James "there's two there" Hill to the crease who clearly had fixture bonding and not record scores in mind. KF's two spinners had somewhat put on the brakes and Jimmy decided it was time for some action.
Having reached into the 30's himself and Aidy well on the way to 50 he decided not only to run the latter out but his own son Matthew followed in similar fashion and then himself. Unbelievable.
The now raucous crowd began spilling down the banking and a small boy appeared from around the site screen just as the skipper faced. It was like a red shirt to a bell and another in the tent.
Scott and Barker steadied the ship at the end and although the old warhorse Coates received a goldie a score of 210 seemed enough.
Now the jesters favourite pastime eating tea. As a result of not much occupation of the crease appetites seemed light and it was left to Christine Waite (fresh from her hoof) to hoover up the KFC's cake bargain bucket. Stuart Dobson declared he preferred tarts but we already knew that !
It was nice to see the full Barker family turning out however a bad hair day for Lindsey clearly affected the photo.
The first half saw several drinks breaks and those with one eye on "Where The Heart Is" starting at it's new 8 O,clock slot wondered whether the day would finish with televisual disappointment. Never Worried !!
Richie began strongly but was not helped by some poor fielding and finally deciding to knock over the openers castle was his only option. Next a dolly to James Hill at Gully/Backstop and the Jesters were on the way.
Scott & Coates worked in tandem and the former managed to bag one of two very sharp caught and bowled's.
Two wickets for Waite and the home side were beaten however the now very boisterous beer fuelled crowd were baying for some lusty hitting. The match was effectively over however the dogged resistance of KF's number three (who was booked in on a fortnights all inclusive) was soon joined by "sausage" who was determined to entertain the now Turkish Football sounding crowd.
They were not disappointed. After being grilled for his bowling Sausage chipped & smashed the ball all over the park. He was definitely on a roll. Well batted Sausage ! Have yourself a cocktail.
A thoroughly entertaining game and our thanks go to the hosts and we hope to see them again next year.
Finally on the way home, and with the tour looming, disaster nearly struck. Main strike bowler Ritchie Barker (being followed by his car insurance broker) and being driven by Lindsey narrowly avoided a JET2 737 as they passed Yeadon airport. Ritchie could clearly be seen mouthing "That was f****** close"
And so on to Blackpool.
Tourists to meet at the Norbreck Colditz hotel at noon for muster.
