Report by DRB
Knaresborough Forests concerns about the Jesters playing strength & the weather both proved unfounded as a terrific match was played in mainly fine weather.
10 players (only Scottie missing) assembled at the only natural Sunday lunch spot; the Globe, overlooking the picturesque ground. The Winterbottoms had already ordered from the limited menu & when the skipper got his order in the landlord informed the rest of the team that they could not take any more orders as they were fully booked up & only had a small kitchen (as shown by Ben in photo). The others were gutted & had to check out the pork pies, crisps & baguettes which variety's consisted of cheese or cheese & onion!!! Hungry (& angry) student Matty Hill ventured to the local supermarket to find that they had run out of sandwiches as well. Those that had dinner say the Beef was lovely, not much consolation to the rest of the watching & drooling Jesters.
The home team had played the day before in constant drizzle & had turned the ground into a mud bath but the wind & a bit of sun dried things out ok. It was agreed that batsmen would retire at 50 (didn’t go down well with Miami) & so the Jesters, after winning the toss opened up with Menorca tour veterans Dobson & Senior. A rapid start from the 1st 4 gave the prospects of a huge score but the retirement of Lee; freshly back from Nodderdale league team duties led to another middle order collapse. The last 3 led by now “veteran” youngster Nathan led a mini recovery & the returning Lee just got us up over 200 with 5 over’s unused. Nathan had earlier marked his debut in the boundary bowls completion with a victory over all the seasoned veterans whose claims that their rhythm was broken by a brief rain break fell on deaf ears!
The home club had arranged a light tea & then a bar-b-que after the game so some Jesters took to the field hungry for wickets & food! With the Jesters bereft of any wicket-keeping talent Dobby volunteered to don the gloves & all went ok until about half way when the wheels fell off & the batsman missing the ball was just as likely to bring runs as if he hit it! The combined age of the opening bowlers totalled 28 years but both Dane & Nathan bowled fine spells, sharing 3 wickets between them. Everything was going ok until a large partnership between Horseman & Walker took the home close to victory but the skipper had cunningly kept his best 2 bowlers back & in a thrilling finish Lee completed a fine day by taking a catch at backward square leg to give the visitors a victory by the smallest possible margin.
Everybody got a bat, everybody got a bowl & a victory by 1 run is the definition of a perfect Sunday friendly game & following the b-b-q the Jesters went home happy & with stomachs finally full.
