Match Report By The Rawdon Legend (“RL”)
There are only two things are certain on a Sunday in the summer, the RL having a hangover and the Jesters batting first when Belly is captain. On this occasion Low Moor skipper Garath Harrison won the toss and asked the Jesters to bat on a bright but windy day.
Before a ball had been bowled mistakes were made by both captains, Garath only selected nine players, which for all you readers who know nothing about cricket is two short of the maximum eleven which are allowed to play. Belly decided to open the batting with Nelly only to have been told he was half an hour away (just round the corner finishing his lunch).
Mark (“It’s the way I play”) Mceneaney slogged a few early doors allowing RL to go in but was out to a catch taken by Garath who seemed to be the only Low Moor fielder who could hold on to the ball. Dale joined his former Kirkheaton team mate Andy Grey and they both smashed the ball to all parts of this quaint ground, which over looks the M606.
Macca then begged the opposition captain to allow him to field, which of course brought about two good slip catches from the Rob Key look-alike. While umpiring RL had a quick look through the dialled number list on his mobile phone to try and piece together Saturday nights celebrations. One number that wasn’t recognisable was a call made by Macca to a floosy from Harehills he had pulled on Saturday night, one can only imagine how he managed to do this when he was out with his girlfriend!
Belly finished off the innings with a few big hits, which is ideal preparation if you are representing Barnsley CC in an international Twenty/20 competition in October.
Tea was taken which was on a pay per item basis, it was extremely good apart from the price, Dale commenting that his tea had cost him £9.20.
RL and Chris Wilkinson opened reasonably well, most of Low Moors runs coming through slip, gully and fine leg. Unfortunately for Chris his cousin David Wilkinson dropped an absolute sitter of the big hitting Carl Harrison. This in effect cost the Jesters the game and lost us the Jimmy Bastow memorial trophy for the second year in a row.
With options running out Belly summoned Scottie from the middle lane of the M606, where he had drifted off too, to turn his arm over. The results were mixed Scottie getting hit out of the ground but taking a few wickets too, including Carl’s.
Five overs later and the game was over, an easy victory for Low Moor.
CoCo presented the trophy to Gareth with an envious Belly looking on. It was then up to the pub to share a drink with some old friends including Caggy, this was a big surprise for some younger Jesters who thought that Caggy was just a myth a little bit like Colonel Sanders, Andy Grey didn’t know that Caggy actually existed! It was also the time to toast absent friends who couldn’t play for one reason or another.
An enjoyable day had by all though and the Jesters preparation for next year has already
started.
