The Jesters made their 2nd visit to Parkhead in Sheffield; That is most of the Jesters did; One was making his 3rd as Dale, the man who says his initial does NOT stand for “Dickhead” had trailed down the motorway the previous week without checking the fixture date & sat at the ground getting more & more annoyed as nobody was turning up & thinking that the game was cancelled & nobody had told him.
With this Sunday been fathers day it was fitting that the Jesters had 2 different father & son combinations playing, the Hills & the Winterbottoms!
Having tried out the cavery at the local Wheatsheaf Toby last week Dale was in a position to recommend it to the rest of us this week. With 7 having lunch at 12pm (1st shift) & 3 more half an hour later (when they arrived) it was again a good Scottie-less turnout for Sunday lunch.
With Dale skippering the Jesters for the 1st time Pod decided to wind him up by wandering out to the middle with the Parkhead captain, they forgot to take a coin so Dale got to loose the toss anyway. So for the 2nd year running we got to field 1st on a red-hot day. The now regular opening pair of Dane & Nathan (combined age = 27) started with only the latter & younger this time picking up a wicket. Scottie started running through the opposition before Dale removed him from the attack (keep ‘em hungry) Nick Walker had an interesting day; bored with trouser pocket catching he managed to head a catch for 4, reliving the old antics of Dave Creek many years ago. With the headed catch & his habit of bobbing his head when he bowls the new skipper nicknamed him the “headless chicken” prompting hundreds of chicken jokes, too many to recall here. Nick wasn’t the only one to grass a chance with Matt Hill letting down his tag team catching partner. Dale came onto bowl too late & mopped up the tail after Dobby had bowled most of the afternoon without much success.
After we were again well looked after with tea Scott Harrison & Ian Vinall (at his home club started our reply. The latter’s Jesters record is so bad that it is suspected that his duck might actually have raised his career average! Today it was thought that he had noticed his rather attractive new girlfriend talking to some males of her own age group so he tried to pull a half-volley, got bowled & duly walked off to dispense the twenty-something old lads!
The bang on the head had clearly affected Nick as after his umpiring stint he walked off the field, picked up some gloves for the batter & walked back on & stood on the opposite side of the wicket to Scottie who had gone on to replace him – bizarre!!! After he had batted & was walking off he also fell for the “ go back it was a no-ball” joke- talk about kicking a man when he is down!
Young Nathan got put back in his place in the Boundary bowls competition by ‘veteran’ Scottie. The next instalment of this clash of the titans to be resumed at the next game.
Everybody manage to get a bat with varying degrees of success including 9 year old Harrison Vinall, son of the home team skipper & nephew of Ian who had kindly helped out the 1 short Jesters by playing & putting in a fine fielding performance before we were all out just short of the target.
Catching competition update:- RL-3, Scottie-2, Hill tag team-2, Ives-1, DRB-0
