With the weather set fine and a slight off shore breeze,
the Jesters gathered in the Stalag bar of the Norbreck castle to await
instructions for their escape bid to St.Annes. Having arrived in the
early morning Scotty and Coco had already planned
a route, and despite
the heavy donkey traffic the Jesters arrived at the club of a certain F.Flintoff to play their first match. The match was arranged by former
Jester Andy Kellet, currently doing missionary work in the land of clogs
and cobbles. The lightning fast outfield promised a festival of runs and
the tiny crowd were not to be disappointed. The match was played in a
very friendly spirit ,Andy offered the Jesters the opportunity to bat
first and now has just the one hand. A pre match drug test had revealed
an excess of calpol in young McCallum's bloodstream, but after
negotiations he was allowed to continue. If rested properly overnight
the Jesters can be very cheeky with the bat and this proved the case.
Dobbies 81( retired) Neils' 43 (stumped, tired) Aideys 50 and Dales 80
saw the Jesters to a total of 271, but was it enough? The houses around
the ground had obviously been peppered in the past by Flintoff, but
their heavy protection proved useless against the onslaught of
Huddersfield builder and former band member of Human League, Winterbottom, as he attempted to create some work in the St. Annes area.
The boundary bowls was a stroll for Jimmy as he read the pace of the
links course well. Dave kept disappearing under the covers and Scotty
was devastated to be beaten into second place by Coco.
After a splendid tea, a traditional Lancashire dish of spicy chicken
wings and chips ,the Jesters went out into the searing heat to face a
mixture of youth and experience. Opening bat Davis retired on an
excellent 87, as did Bradley (later to return to make 96. Jimmy Hill,
who can terrorise batsmen with his irritable bowel system followed up
his boundary bowls success , with 5-28. Scotty had not recovered from
his earlier exertions and was spanked for 35 off his two overs and left
to practice on the parallel bars at long off. With St Annes nearing the
target but with few remaining wickets, Jesters opening bowlers were
brought back to terrorise the fourth team juniors. This prompted the
retired batsmen to return and for a few overs players were on and off
like the proverbial lady of the street's underwear. When no more batsmen
appeared the St Annes innings was finished on 250-9,to complete a great
game, hopefully to be repeated next year. Many thanks to St. Annes for
getting our tour off to a great start.
