A thriller in Illawaalla

The Wednesday fixture saw the Jesters venture to the Illawalla ground , the home of Thornton Cleveleys and their splendid new clubhouse. The Jesters were also looking resplendent in their royal purple tops. My wife took one look at it and declared that no way was that going with other clothes in the wash. She was as ever proved right as a handwash had the River Menston running purple from it's source at the Menston Ams to where it meets the Wharfe behind Otley Cricket Club. So be warned if you haven't washed your shirt yet, which in most cases won't be contemplated for several weeks, take care.

Everyone ,with the exception of Broughy made it for breakfast, a Jesters personal best. Being loud shirt night it was a less than aimless wander for me Belly and Andy as we set out in search of something appalling. Andy Rhodes claimed his several shirts were his fathers, clearly a man of great taste and discretion. Having scoured the 178 charity shops of Blackpool we eventually found the shirts just round the corner from our hotel where Andy bought a shirt so loud it was later to win the competition. Unfortunately even triple x would not fit Bellys' manly shoulders. He was eventually gifted a shirt by Dennis and will be wearing it regularly at his dancing class. I am sure a photo will be accompanying this report.

I am told by Belly that he doesn't want actual details of the game in the report ,so suffice it to say that Liam batted liberally in a fine knock, Andy Rhodes was nearly given out lethargic before wicket, then hit a brilliant quick fire half century. Dale couldn't be bothered to put on his pads so declared prematurely.

When we bowled we had a slip cordon that looked like central casting had sent for four guys to play the badmen in a third rate western, their combined age would have shamed Methusalah, but their experience would prove invaluable. Jesters fielded well in the heat, you just have to take your hats off to them, especially Broughy. I have described Bellys' bowling as like watching an octopus falling off a step ladder before now and today was no exception. A final leap by Liam resulted in a politically acceptable tie that had been appreciated by the vast crowd. Except for one elderly lady. Dales insistence on punctuating every silence with words of Huddersfield wisdom ( I believe there are 12 in all)  caused her to refer to him as a " half naked gobs***e". One of many compliments he would receive during the week.

An excellent game of cricket, many thanks to Thornton for their hospitality and to Peter Murden who umpired today and was instrumental in original setting up the fixture. Did I mention it was a tie. Oh and another thing, we shouldn't really accompany someone we have just got out off the field, explaining how we got it to turn!!!
