report by Pod
The Jesters tipped up at Blubberhouses CC, a picturesque setting in a field in the Dales, for what was expected to be a hotly contested fixture. Alas, the only pro in the Nodderdale League was complaining of a pain in the arse (irony is alive and well), and wouldn't be opening the batting or bowling. A negotiated toss meant youngster James Ford and the reliable Ives opened the batting and we were soon chugging along at 6 an over. The small ground and fast flowing river on the boundary meant each maximum resulted in a lost ball. An expensive place to play cricket, BCC, although their chairman obviously has so much money he can afford to throw it away. A friendly fixture at the end of season means a relaxed atmosphere and a time for a few drinks, but there's seldom a need to bring cans onto the outfield, except to make a spectacle of oneself, a mission that the Ronald McDonald look-alike was happy to take on for most of the afternoon.
Ives departed after getting a start, to let Fordy continue batting with the formers' Barnsley team-mates. There was confusion as the normal 'Yes or No' calling was replaced with 'Stop and Go' for a while, but everyone filled their boots for a few overs, got themselves out, and gave somebody else a go. Macca take note. Pod Snr and Jnr enjoyed a spell at the wicket together, and Dyson got in for the last 5 overs, being the only batter not to hit a 6 in the innings. Ritchie kept score and a running total of the lost balls which ended up at 286-5 and 15 respectively. Macca left the field limping, shortly after taking an important but lengthy phone call at slip. One guesses that Pool are looking to recruit for 2010 already.
After a relaxed interval Dave Thompson and Ritchie opened up and the BCC big guns were under pressure. Ritchie kept his end tight but Dave was a tad wayward and got punished. Dyson extended his lead in the catching competition, but back came the Hill tag-team with four of their own. Not to be outdone, Dyson pouched another couple himself. The bowling was swapped around and Scotty got in the wickets, as did Dobby, with a terrific caught and bowled. With wickets tumbling 11 year old Jack came to the crease, dollied one up first ball and wandered back. A request for him to bat again was rejected by the Jesters skipper (If your playing with the big boys.....). Ronald took offence to this and at the fall of the ninth wicket, decided to pad up and have a go himself. The Jesters waited 10 minutes for him to be ready and take guard, and then proceed to stonewall everything in protest. Still, Ives was too good for him and the game ended with frayed tempers, and continued complaints that we should have let the small boy bat again.
A convincing win for the Jesters on what could be their only trip to Blubberhouses CC. If yesterdays antics of their village idiot are the norm, once is enough.
Catching competition update:- RL=10, Hill tag team=7, DRB=5, Ives=3, Scottie=1
