report by pod

For the first time in years, the Jesters had a bowl first, and one feels this is an approach that we should be taking a little more often. The "iceman" with the skipper

JCC turned up with 7 bowlers, 1 fielder, 2 wicket keeper batsmen and 2 allrounders, and Nelly moulded this ramshackle bunch into a winning combination.

As is the JCC fashion, the bowlers bowled (or kept wicket) and the rest got a chance to bat. We could have been chasing leather but a bright spell from fitness freak Dan destroyed the top order. Opening partner Ritchie was wicket-less once again and got a bit of undeserved tap, in what was a quiet day for the quiet man.

The change bowling was a mixed bag. Hill Jnr has stopped bowling a bad ball every over and reaped the rewards in a tight spell, but the occasion got to ‘Our’ Ashley, who found the phrase ‘line and length’ a complete mystery in both aspects. After drinks we turned to spin and the Colton tail were as awestruck by Scotty as we have ever seen. At the other end Thacks shows he has learnt a thing or two as well, as a SFT was caught round the corner and Pod snaffled a sharp stumpingPhil (centre) looks relaxed on debut opportunity to tick that remaining box in the anals.

Normally 124 would have been a breeze but we wondered at tea just where the runs were going to come from. Having not bowled Pod was hopeful of a spot up the order and disappointed to be asked to bat at 7. Pod makes a quick call to Belly to find out the score at the cup final and returns to find a change in the batting order has moved him down to 8. It’s understandable how Sledge felt the previous day.

Matty Big C and the ‘Iceman’ opened up and we’re soon 1 down. Nelly comes to the crease and we are well on our way. Aidey, looking like Leslie Ash, with 10 stitches in his lips from the previous day, enjoys the bowling and the quick outfield and 60-1 looks healthy. After telling Aidey to keep getting forward, Nelly goes back and plays on and the Iceman, obviously enjoying their chats, joins him back in the tent. Now the word ‘flimsy’ might be used to describe the middle order, as Thacks, Aiden and Danny all depart having had little impact with the bat.

84-6 with Pod and Leadbeater at the crease is not a joyous situation. Nevertheless Phil bats with a technique seldom witnessed in the 3rds and a temperament to match. Pod nurdles, prods and pokes and generally does what he does best as we pass the 100. With 7.00 p.m. (and the bar what a shirt (to order one see skipper)opening) still a way off, we play a couple of maidens out before closing in on the target and finishing it off with 15 minutes to go. Time for a shower and to put the kit in the car, and enter the bar at 6.59 p.m.

Happy days.

Sam Smiths bitter and Ayingerbrau Lager.

Not quite so happy days.

A healthy crowd, and a game of cricket that encapsulates all that the Jesters is meant to be. Everybody from both teams has an involvement, and all those cancelled matches pale into the distant yonder. The Jesters are back playing again, Belly has missed out on an appearance, we have taken a bagful of catches, and all is right with the world. Roll on Hardwick Hall next week, no showers, a chemical toilet and a field full of flies.
