Report by Coco
reviving an old fixture
The first game of the season saw the renewal of an old fixture for the
Jesters at the up and coming club,
the
top team in the wharfedale valley, the Olicanians. Always a favourite
fixture with the Jesters, dating back to the sixties, the fixtures ceased
following some high scores by the visitors, the last time the teams met was
in 1999.The large crowd of both home and away supporters were treated to a
runfest on a good batting wicket, Jesters narrowly scraping home by 14 runs,
hopefully this can once more become a regular fixture on the Yorkshire
sporting calendar. Apparently I am not allowed to mention the performances
of individuals, you can look at the scorecard for that.
The game was really a test of Alan Halls new hip, which came through with
flying colours as he scampered up and down the wicket, punishing his sons
bowling with the confidence only a titanium plated nimbus 2000 hip can give.
John Coates had a nostalgia overdose on a ground where he took many scalps,
none of which ever suited him.
The
silent brotherhood of Wyke were well represented by Paul and Richie, their
tight bowling a telling factor in the Jesters victory. Ex Olicanian Winston
Clarke made his debut , wearing a pair of borrowed whites that he complained
were a bit short, but he was looking good till he had his off stump removed
first up.
Fielding varied from excellent to distinctly average. A lot of creeping in
from the boundary edge ( mainly Jimmy ) flopping from the skipper and an
unbelievable miss from Scotty made
us
look like a Sunday side.
And then there's Dale, one of the finest cricketers ever to wear hair gel
and a single braid, his cricket bag being a vast collection of styling gels
, hairstyling gum and a small tub of dubious content with the words matt
malt mousse written on.
His
failure to collect the ball cleanly in the field apparently due to the
vibrating of his phone which he keeps down the front of his trousers. At
this point I am justly vindicated in saying "It was never like this in my
day".
Next week it's Knaresborough, and we may discover what Sausage keeps down
his trousers, I bet it's not his phone.
