Report by DRB
With a 1.30 start there was no time for
Sunday (actually Monday) lunch so a bacon sarny at Rawdon
cc’s
dads v lads match had to suffice. For this tournament the Jesters had on paper a
strong looking side including only 1 of the 2 permitted guests the former
Knaresborough & Floppyfoot all rounder Greg Pickles this season turning out in
the Bradford league for Idle. Unfortunately of the 11 on the beer mat only 10
managed to get out of bed & make it to the ground; Carl Harrison who the
previous day had been attending a wedding surly did his chances of receiving a
Tankard in the near future no good let down the Jesters, his team mates &
himself!! Ross Flannigan, a team-mate at Low Moor who had come to watch borrowed
some whites & made up the XI, many thanks to him.
Dale, inspired by his fellow season
joint leading wicket taker, Scottie unveiled his new boots, also purchased from
ebay for £6. Our 1st match opponents Guiseley who included numerous
guests from
the Burley & Otley clubs were in the end comprehensively beaten with a powerful
half century from Macca which included a ‘shocking’ running out of Graham Dobson
in his desire to keep the strike. Aussie Steven Duckworth also struck some lusty
blows at the end to up the run rate. Many thanks also
go
to fellow Antipodean Meg for her scoring in this & previous games. ( feel free
to come back next year!!!). Ritchie did most of the damage with the ball,
picking up a rare Jesters “Michele”.
So for the 2nd
consecutive year we played the hosts Olicanians (who had beaten Farnells in
their 1stgame) in the final. With most of the Jesters luminaries
(committee) in attendance (& sat in the royal box) we set a competitive if
slightly under par score for the hosts to chase. Dale in his new boots top
scoring & feeling his age having to do a lot of running because of the large
ground & damp outfield. In heavy rain (no swing) the Jesters bowlers could not
make any inroads & 2 excellent innings from young South African E. White &
Burley cc skipper & guest player Richard Brook took their side to a comfortable
victory. Although disappointed to lose for the 2nd year running in
the final sometimes you just have to hold your hand up & say you were outplayed
on the day.
