Report by Scottie
Unusually for the writer Jesters related activity began on Saturday this week when a trip to the local Renault dealer in Otley lead to a tentative deal under the new car scrappage deal.
It was decided a test drive on the Sunday would confirm matters along with payment of an appropriate deposit.
Seeing our game the following day was to be at Pool this was geographically perfect and also provided the possibility of a couple of hundred quid towards the deposit should a good spell of slow left arm lead to any sort of sponsorship deal being offered by our hosts.
This was not to be as Sunday morning brought a re-occurrence of my back problem ruling out any chance of bowling. The late withdrawals of Dale & Dane (Health Reasons) also meant, despite the Jesters ever burgeoning squad, I had no option other than to play along with Ben Schofield who was coaxed out of retirement to make up our numbers.
"Dorset is a long way to travel for a game ?" pointed out the writers wife a comment that set the tone for the next few hours.
A swift conclusion to my vehicular transaction meant the rare opportunity to join the lunch club for two courses for a tenner in the White Hart. On arrival a distinct lack of Jesters caused concern however a quick exchange of texts revealed our squad was actually in the Hunters having turned down the actual price of Sunday lunch in the White Hart of £12.99. Taxi for Dobson !!
Arriving at 1 O'clock ,a full hour before kick off, and fully looking forward to a quick bite and a beer, I was met by a mass exodus of Jesters explaining they were going to watch the test match in Pools clubhouse.
Now, although I love my cricket, I am not known for following the nuances as closely as some but I do know that lunch in a test match is usually 1pm till 1.40pm. It was not surprising therefore there was no test cricket to watch on arrival and a hungry and thirsty treasurer made his way to the new extended dressing room to prepare for action.
Winning the toss and batting (Yawn !!) saw our numbers six & seven umpiring and time for a chat for the rest of us in the tent. Matty Hill seemed exceptionally grumpy and when pushed revealed he was unimpressed with a deal he had done whilst falling out of a taxi at 4am involving him swapping £15 cash, his house keys and a rawdon training top for a pink disposable camera ! Unable to open his front door with the camera he was forced to awaken his Mum with the obvious repercussions.
On the pitch Dobby had clearly left his magic "Jumper" at home scratching around for 20 minutes before going cheaply.
Dobbys jumper (akin to Billy's boots & Felix's underpants) had helped him to a hat trick last week and is obviously necessary for him in the twilight of his career.
Niall soon followed ( a rare failure for him) leaving Weff and Gilbert (assumed name for Macca to avoid any conflict) to push the score towards 100. Following Gilberts departure Matty Hill and Weff dug in both going well and pushing us towards the 200 surely needed as a minimum to defend in the circumstances.
Weff's departure exposed our youthful middle order and the experienced eye of your correspondent could see exactly what was about to follow.
Rhianne Woodham, a junior cricketer at Pool, had been asked to field due to the illness of another player and it was clear with 8 overs left and the Jesters youth at the crease, what was going to happen next.
Adopting the "I'll smash her out of the ground" approach rather than a more cautious "I'm not letting a girl get me out" approach saw Hill, Thompson & Walker all dispatched and the Jesters left with a below par 186 which was never going to be enough.
A tea which would have exceeded even Pod's high expectations (hot roast pork, stuffing & apple sauce sarny's !) was taken and the Ashes duly regained.
Taking to the field Jesters managed to remove three of the home higher order including one stunning slip catch off the bowling of Barker. This was however the end of our successes and fine innings from Bent and Anslow saw Pool home with several over to spare.
It was nice to join the catching competition at long last however I am now drawn to Nick Walkers "pocket catching" comp which appears to be much more fun. The skill required is to turn down the traditional way of taking the most straight forward of chances by dropping onto one's knees and thrusting your hips at the ball in a bid to catch it in your trouser pocket.
Trust me, It's the future !!!!!
Finally congratulations to Gilbert for remembering to take his kit home and thanks to Pool for a great afternoon's entertainment.
