Report by DRB
After a bout of inactivity including a cricket-less tour the Jesters returned to action at Pool-in-Wharfedale. 8 players congregated at the Hunters to be informed that the only food on offer were pre-made sandwiches, this is no preparation for a big Sunday fixture so it was back into the cars & a short trip to the Wharfedale pub on Arthington Lane. On perusal of the menu it was noted that Venison burger was available. The conversation between 2 un-named younger members of the side went:-
Venison burger – is that deer?
No its only £7.50 (Jimmy Cricket would pay money for that sort of material!)
The older members (Dobby & the skipper) went traditional & the rest went for an assortment of burgers one of which had mouldy bread. The good food critics were not impressed!
After never previously beating Pool the skipper roped in a couple of ringers for Jesters debuts. The Otley cc star pairing of Richy Halloran & John Brough who it turns out also boosted the crowd with their “travelling support”.
So in front of a huge (by Jesters standards) crowd the Rawdon cc pair of Ben Morley & late recruit Jamie Pickering opened the batting. The latter fell early but young Ben showed maturity beyond his years by hogging the strike like a seasoned pro, bringing back fond memories of the late & great Jimmy Bastow who’s ability to count to 5 was world class!
Ben completed a fine century (his 1st in senior cricket) in the 38th over (having faced about 30 of them himself). The Otley lads also enjoyed a hit out taking advantage of the home side giving every player a bowl.
One other highlight of the innings occured when Carl McCallum, umpiring for the 1st time asked the batter how many balls were left in the over – it’s your job to count Carl!
We were again well looked after at tea with the skipper this time adding a piece of cucumber to his large pile of sandwiches to help with his diet.
It was back to the now traditional opening bowling pair of Thomson (exhausted from his tour exploits) & Brown, (trying to impress the Rawdon cc 3rd X1 selectors) who picked up a couple of wickets including Jester Redmond Bolton cheaply but the runs were flowing so the Otley pair were brought into the attack & together some tight bowling dried up the runs & the wickets started to fall.
The innings was finished off by late spells from Scottie who prematurely celebrated his 100th Jesters maiden (a forgotten single from the 1st ball) & a maiden bowl from Carl who started with a wide, which finished on the next strip but then did ok (worthy of another bowl one day). All the “pink ladies” (Matt, Dave & Carl) took catches, the latter a couple showing that he is yet another Rawdon 3-in-1 cricketer.
