Report by DRB
The captain & vice captain had a cunning plan for the fixture at Sewerby Park; We would all drive over Saturday night after our league fixtures & have a tour like night out in Bridlington. Unfortunately, as is now the norm with this cracking fixture we were unable to recruit 11 players for the game. Of the 9 who would play only 1 other (Andy Grey) thought going over early was a good idea. So with the rain delayed Saturday program finished the 3 of us undeterred, dashed over to our B&B in Brid’ & then checked out the towns night life into the early hours with Dale managing to fall off a stage in the Utopia night club & Andy managing to upset numerous boyfriends of “approached” female’s. As breakfast was religiously set at 8.30am our sleep was limited & not helped by Dale sleepwalking around the rooms in the middle of the night!
The morning was spent with some “Coco like” aimless wandering on the streets & beaches of Bridlington & then the short drive up to the ground to await the rest of the team, who all arrived late after, what Dobby described as a “nightmare” drive. The home team happened to have a 12th man so we pinched him and we were “allowed” to bat 1st. The batting order was determined by who was ready & so Dale in an unaccustomed Jesters role & debutant Andy Vinall (who had made it from Sheffield without any problem) started us off. Unfortunately for Andy his 1st innings in Jesters colours ended very quickly with a 1st baller. On a “lively” wicket Dale held the innings together until drinks & then everybody else chipped in to get us to a respectable total. We were not helped by one of our own players:- Dale making a rare appearance as a umpire found delight in distracting the other batters & Dobby in particular found trying to bat while laughing impossible!
With Sam Coultas from the home club playing for us we had the interesting (at least for this correspondent) scenario of a Jesters team containing players from 7 different clubs in 7 different Saturday leagues. For keen league cricket & Jesters followers (if there is such a person) they might want to try & name the teams & leagues involved. Answers at the bottom of this page.
In the 2nd half the pitch had dried out but there was still just a bit there & our 1st 4 experienced bowlers all bowled terrifically well & all took wickets quickly. With our “Talisman” Dale keeping us, & the opposition constantly entertained with his sharp wit the last man was dismissed by the skipper, playing in his 300th Jesters match with his 1st ball!
