report by DRB
With late withdrawls, people working Sunday mornings & a lack of drivers resulting in lots of late phone calls it was with some disarray that the Jesters set off to Huddersfield to take on Shelley for the 1.30 start they had asked for. With 7 teenagers in our ranks the average age was considerably lower than normal. With all the above factors Sunday lunch was just a forlorn dream!
Arriving late (after getting lost again) was not a problem as the home team were making our problems seem inconsequential. A large group of them had been on a Saturday night out in Barnsley (twinned with Dodge city) & had got into a fracas with the local constabulary, resulting in them spending the night at her majesty’s pleasure. When they started to arrive it was in taxi’s straight from Barnsley police station!
We also had an unusual situation as Dale, at the scene of last years funny turn (see last years report for details) could start the game but had to leave early to attend a christening & Scottie who could only get to the ground later; so the Shelley skipper kindly agreed that we could swap players mid afternoon like a wrestling tag team match! ( suggestions that they should both only get half an appearance in the annals were rejected by the ruling body; ie Caggy )
In our ranks were 3 debutants:- Kindly playing at the last minute was young Jake Hodges whose mate Henry Scanlan also came along to score. They were both rescued from car park attendant duties at the Waddilove cup final at Rawdon. Also playing were brothers Alex & Tim Taylor who play their league cricket at the Almondbury Wesleyans & Lascalls Hall cricket clubs respectively.
With both sides keen to bat 1st the coin came down the right way & the opening pair of Alex & Redmond Bolton strode to the wicket. The Taylor brothers both fell early but Red, who had a let off early after been bowled hook, line & sinker with a no-ball & Dale took advantage of some bowlers with the “scars” of the previous evening.
After smashing 99 Dale then disappeared in the style of Dave Nicholls at South Shore, Blackpool (he had told his wife he was just popping out for a paper) many years ago! Scottie arrived just in time for tea which was sarnies & burgers with the Sunday dinner-less & hungry Matt Hill leading the queue for.
After not getting a bat Dobby decided he wanted to open the bowling leaving poor young Nathan having to struggle up hill into the wind! Without giving him too much praise Dobby did bowl with tremendous rhythm (if for 1 over too many) to fire out the oppositions first four wickets with the help of a tremendous slip catch by the skipper (who writes this rubbish) to dismiss their star man. If only he could get that support on a Saturday he could have doubled his season’s wicket tally (from two to four!). The home teams committee certainly seemed to be impressed & it was rumoured that contracts were been drawn up for the 2011 season!
After Dobby was rested the home team found things a lot easier & were coasting to victory until 15 year old Tim Taylor, bowling some tidy left harm seam took a couple of late wickets & it was left to the last pair to inch their way to victory, hitting the winning runs from the skippers 1st post operation bowl in a potential “heart stopping” finish!
On leaving the field we were asked jokingly by the always friendly home team what it was like to loose to a group of jail birds!
