report by POD

The season closed with a game that encapsulated all that is good about friendly cricket. Naturally the Jesters won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that offered swing and seam movement and spin for the slower bowlers. With the weight of the jesters batting all at the top of the order, and the tail starting at 5, a good start was to be required. Macca, expected by many to be the star of the show, included a giant 6 onto the changing room roof, before being bowled by W.G’s negative, played nothing more than a cameo role. With the rest of the batters back in the hutch it was Pod himself who shepherded the tail to a respectable total. (One wonders who should be spending the winter in Oz!) Help did come from the Idle skipper Topham who has now gone  five years since he pitched one. The Jesters tail did wag somewhat with Phil Lines and Ritche playing class shots and in true tradition we were bowled out in the final over. Pick of the bowling was Qadim, Johnson, Wright and Rocker Robinson, a Jester of old.

With the hosts all scrambling to bat at 11, Topham and Goodaire opened and got off to a good start. Mikey Hainsworth got swing and benefitted from pitching the ball up. Ritchie was tightness personified, as he bowled with some control, and gave nothing to hit.

Magic moment of the innings came as Corky was stumped by Weff. He turned round in amazement at the decision, and seeing his foot on the line. “I’m on the line” he spluttered at the Umpire. The coaching of the Idle juniors is in good hands then is it Corky?

With Belly aware of Robinson’s inauspicious history (check the annals), when he joined Lyons at the crease, the game was as good as over. But these two took the game by the scruff of the neck, and dragged Idle back into it. Like a good wine, some things get better with age and Rocker played a cracking knock. Unfortunately, lungs are not one of those things and whilst attempting and failing to ‘breath out of his arse’ after a quick three, Rocker was happy to lean on his bat for the last over.

With the vastly experienced Johnson taking strike and the youth of Matty Hill with the ball, we all knew the outcome. Ginge (surely a reference to his hair colour – before it went grey) tried to hit the glory shots to win the game. A shrewd leg stump line from young Pod tied up the old timer who should have been trying to get his more talented batting partner on strike. However with a boundary required from the last ball, Hill’s nerve held, and a single to the keeper not enough for the hosts.

Thanks must go to all involved with the setting up of this fixture, not least the tea ladies who served up a wonderful Friday tea. You know, just what you want before a night on the beer. Hot dogs, sausages, baked potatoes, a mountain of beans. Terrific.
