report by SS
On a perfect day for cricket a strong Jesters
side bolstered by debutants Dave Wilkie and Sam Lockwood visited
young
friends at Pool.
Skipper Dave Bell made his first meaningful
contributions of the season by winning the toss and then falling on and
destroying a young child's pedal cycle.
A flat track and tired bowlers allowed the
Jesters to make a steady start and
time for a large helping of boundary bowls.
A titanic struggle ensued between skipper Bell
and Hill senior with the former edging victory on the last end with a well
weighted effort.
Pool toiled in the sweltering heat as the
Jesters amassed 239, the pick of the batsmen being Hill junior with a
magnificent 16 not out at the end. 72 from O'Grady and
65
from Grey were also useful knocks.
In reply Pool got off to a blistering start
posting 61 for the first wicket in almost even time. Despite three quick
wickets from the ever threatening Scott, Jesters lacked penetration (as
always) and failed at any time to stem a steady flow of runs.
Jesters fielding could have been better with
many apparently suffering from glass backs. Skipper Bell dropped the easiest
chance since Chipper Ramsden at Kidmore End and Dave (pound on the ball)
Stanny collected more refusals than Coco in a Henley night club.
All this resulted in Pool cantering to victory
with three overs to spare.
The champagne moment was a run out athletically
executed by 'Moggy' O'Grady which removed the batter but also pole axed the
young umpire who despite his brave claims to have been uninjured had clearly
suffered some damage to his eyesight !!
All in all this was a game played on a batsman's
paradise that entertained the large crowd and cricket was definitely the
winner.
Finally it was excellent to see Andy and Sam
from Huddersfield keeping our connection with that part of the world alive
and to hear that good supporters of the Jesters, Norwood Green in Bradford
had reached cup finals in both their first and second team competitions.
