report by DRB
The Jesters 2nd visit to play Shepley did not commence very smoothly when at the new Baildon resident friendly meeting point of the Shoulder of Mutton public house car park 4 players were present at the allotted time; The problem been that there should have been 5. After a phone call it was discovered that David Wilkinson was not yet conversant with the 1st rule of the Jesters which is the game is still ON unless you are informed otherwise!
With skipper Bell driving it was left to acting secretary Scott to make a few phone calls en-route which eventually resulted in Peter Lockwood (father of Sam) returning home to retrieve his whites from the washing line, they will probably need another wash after a 'stag' like fielding performance!
It is always a notable achievement when a father plays in the same side as his son for the 1st time; This again occurred for the Jesters today when Phil Lines (playing his 1st game for us since 1995) turned out with his son Alex (on debut). Alex falls into the keenness personified category when after signing this web sites guest-book last week (good man) & then been informed he would be batting at no. 6 immediately took that as a signal to put his pads on - marvellous !!!!
Another Jester turning out again after a long break (1993) was Dale Winterbottom who, on a hot day was keen to do a long spell of umpiring (topless) to top up his already well developed sun-tan.
A stage managed toss resulted in us keeping our season long batting 1st record intact & the action started with club stalwarts Neil Waite & Steve Sullivan having a tremendous opening stand with Sully particularly cashing in on home territory for a fine half century. A nice Jesters p.b. from Sam Lockwood was followed in the latter stages by let another not out from the new master (a title he has now inherited from his father) Matt Hill & Phil Lines proving it is just like riding a bike with some lusty blows. A competitive total was eventually posted on a very good pitch.
At half time another cracking tea was enjoyed by all, many thanks to the ladies for all their efforts.
At the start of the Shepley reply the score was 35-0 after 8 overs & Dale had figures of 4-4-0-0 so the skipper took him off!!!! With limited bowling options the spinners, Waite & Scott bowled long spells & although they took 4 wickets between them the run rate stayed on track & with C.Glover making a fine half century even the skipper taking his 100th catch in Jesters colours late on could not stop a youthfull (& talented) Shepley side powering to victory in the penultimate over (all good chases end there!).
In the 2nd division catching competition Matt Hill snaffled yet another (don't hit the ball in the air near this boy) to take a 3-0 lead over dad!
Catching competition update:- D.Bell 5 v S.Scott 4
